Back in December last year when I wrote about whether it’s Possible to Combine a Sex Work Phone with a Personal Phone, I emailed Fairphone asking for their comments.
Better 6 months late than never. Fairphone replied!
I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen on your site re Fairphone re your commitment to reduced carbon emissions and increased privacy.
I’m a sex worker myself and I own Sex Worker Search, a search engine that indexes the personal websites of independent providers.
I’m also a moderator on the /r/sexworkers and /r/sexworkersonly subreddits.
I’m interested in the possibility of sex workers being able to use one device for both work and personal without getting doxxed via work apps spying on personal contact lists and vice versa.
Fairphone 6 is dual SIM isn’t it? Does it support operating two profiles that are kept sandboxed from each other?
Or if not, maybe two Fairphones could be put into one folding case and treated like a single device.
Are there any modular parts that can be removed and the phone will work without them? eg camera?
If you’re able to reply to my questions, can I please quote you in my article?
My name is Alex from the support team. Nice to e-meet you :).
Thank you for supporting Fairphone.
I apologize for our late reply. I understand that waiting for so long to get a reply is not a good experience. We are experiencing a significant increase in the number of support requests. Please be sure we’re doing our best to catch up! We are grateful for your patience.
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your questions about using The Fairphone (Gen. 6) for dual purposes.
Yes, The Fairphone (Gen. 6) supports dual SIM functionality, allowing two phone numbers on one device.
However, the sandbox environments existing within Android are not connected to SIMs. Yes, it is possible to sandbox, and to separate based on users:
> “Android supports multiple users on a single Android device by separating user accounts and app data. Each user gets a workspace to install and place apps. No user has access to the app data of another user.”
Secondary users have full access to phone calls and texts from any SIM installed, so it is not possible to assign a SIM to individual users. However, it is possible to disable the phone and SMS functions for a secondary user.
As for using the device without the camera module, we don’t test or intend for our devices to be used in this way. It is better to use the built-in camera permissions, or just place a sticker over the camera.
You are more than welcome to quote our technical answer in your article.
For now, I’m just going to continue carrying around two phones. One for work and one for personal.
Maybe a dual SIM Fairphone could safely sandbox my apps such that I could have work apps installed under the work SIM and personal apps under the personal SIM on the same device without having the apps spy on each other. Maybe not.
And the idea of having two phones in one folding case might be something to consider.
I thought since Fairphones are modular and designed to have parts removed and replaced, it might be possible to remove redundant parts like the camera to make my two phones in one case concept a bit less heavy and bulky. Also, maybe not.
Anyway, it’s a nice idea.
